What is biological dentistry?
Biological dentistry an advanced style of dentistry with priority given to overall health. Consideration is given to oral toxins and their effects on long-term health. Many common procedures such as cleanings, fillings, crowns, or implants are performed with variations that avoid toxins and enhance health.
The articles below provide more details and different perspectives about what biological dentistry really is:
- an introduction to biological dentistry
- the components of biological dentistry
- the history and philosophy of biological dentistry
-
Who is biological dentistry for? Is it right for me?
More now than ever, we yearn for a genuine connection with our healthcare providers who can help us navigate modern health challenges. We deserve the freedom to engage in empowering conversation that breaks down the walls put up by centuries of indoctrination. When the focus is on individualized health, we can achieve goals aligned with our own reality.
Biological dentistry is right for you if:
- you believe your health is truly paramount,
- you crave an understanding that goes deeper than what the "industry" provides,
- you want to learn how to prevent cavities and related chronic health problems,
- you want to help your children grow in the healthiest way possible,
- you want to find relief for mystery illnesses that may be connected to your dental condition,
- you realize that standard remedies can be toxic.
Biological dentistry can help you regain your health or help you preserve it. Either way, I believe it is the ideal choice for everyone with an interest in health, raising a family, or dealing with a health crisis regardless of age or condition.-
What's the difference between biological dentistry and holistic dentistry?
Both biological and holistic dentistry incorporate a deeper and broader consideration for long-term health… a thirst for knowledge… a passion for excellence… and a profound respect for the whole body connection. Both are alternative forms of dentistry acknowledging that long-term whole body health is paramount to all else. They are, in essence, a philosophy and a style of dentistry that uses techniques that refine and elaborate on conventional dentistry to address dentistry's potential impact on health.
Here's where they differ: Biological dentistry takes a science-based approach with a focus on dental materials and protocols and their impact on whole body biology. Biological dentistry also supports the body's natural healing ability. Procedures lean towards the conservative side and aim to be minimilly invasive.
Holistic dentistry treats the mouth and teeth as part of the whole body. The links between dental health and whole-body health are emphasized. And of course, common dental toxins are avoided. In the end, it is perhaps less constrained and can sometimes be described as "Eastern" in origin.
You may have realized that they have more in common than not. And that's true -- there is a lot of crossover. In fact, both styles are often merged and practiced as one.
Alternative dentistry owes a lot to Dr. Weston Price, who devoted his career to discovering the true nature of cavities and dental disease and the effect it has on our lives and our future. He pioneered prevention and natural healing of dental disease instead of promoting conventional treatment which is really just a band-aid.
The methods used in alternative dentistry:
- may not be endorsed necessarily by the ADA,
- may not be taught directly by dental schools,
- recognize the shortcomings and political influence on both of the above.
Holistic and biological dentistry both operate on a level of awareness that traditional dentistry may not always be the most appropriate choice, and that alternatives may be superior, safer, and smarter. The IAOMT has a great write-up on biological dentistry.-
Are amalgam fillings harmful?
-
This topic is passionately debated between conventional dentistry and alternative medicine. According to the ADA and FDA's official claims, amalgam fillings are safe and effective.
However, mercury is a known toxin — a very potent neurotoxin. In fact second only to plutonium, it is the most harmful element on earth.
Here is the IAOMT's position paper on dental amalgams.
Amalgam fillings have been shown to release substantial amounts of mercury vapor — even when decades old, completely contrary to mainstream claims. This vapor is inhaled and a large majority (80%) easily passes through the lungs and enters the blood stream. Once in the body, the potential for distribution and harm is enormous.
Amalgam fillings also leach mercury into the saliva. Injesting mercury may cause damage and inflammation of the entire digestive tract leading to digestive problems, food sensitivities, "leaky gut," and ultimately autoimmunity.
Some people are very sensitive to the harmful effects of mercury and can suffer many dramatic and sometimes esoteric symptoms. Others may be able to tolerate some amount of mercury without even being aware. This is often determined by genes such as MTHFR, COMT, APO, and many others. However, mercury harms everyone in some way and tends to build up in the body with continued exposure (bioaccumulate). This can result in mineral imbalances and vitamin deficiencies that may lead to heart-disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, cancer, or almost any other chronic or degenerative disease.
The first video below by Dr. David Kennedy (past president of the IAOMT) shows how mercury vapors escape from amalgam fillings. In fact, for the average-sized filling, this continues for a whopping 200 years! Again, this is contrary to the dismissive claims made by dental trade associations.
And the next video is by the University of Calgary. It demonstrates how mercury destroys brain cells (neurons).
To learn more about alternative perspectives on mercury amalgams and their potential impact on health, the book "It's All in Your Head: The Link Between Mercury Amalgams and Illness" by Dr. Hal Huggins is an invaluable resource.

Why do silver amalgam fillings contain mercury?
“Amalgam” means a mix of metals. Amalgam fillings are made by mixing a powdered form of a few metals (silver, copper, tin, zinc) with liquid mercury. The purpose of the mercury is to create an emulsion with the other powdered metals causing a reaction which hardens the mixture into a solid metal to fill a void in a tooth.
Mercury is the only metal that is liquid at room temperature, and seems to be the only chemical that can cause the hardening reaction for amalgam fillings.
Amalgam was invented / discovered in the early 1800's for use in dentistry and has been a source of controversy for nearly two centuries.
-
Are silver amalgam fillings still used today?
Surprisingly yes. According to the ADA, FDA, and many dentists, amalgam is still an acceptable filling material. In fact, recent statistics from the ADA reveal that 42-50% of US dentists still use amalgam.
50 million silver-mercury fillings are still placed annually in the USA!
In our mercury-safe dental office, amalgams are never used. There are several modern material options which are much safer and far superior.
-
Should I replace my silver amalgam fillings with an alternative material?
Metal fillings are an obsolete technology, one that should have never existed in our opinion. Remembering high school science, metal expands when heated and shrinks when cooled. The mouth goes thru wild temperature swings all day long when eating and drinking. This causes metal fillings to exert pressure on the brittle enamel of the teeth. This also causes metal fillings to warp over time leading to cracks, leaks, fractures, and decay.
Studies (and my experience) show that silver fillings over 10 years old have decay underneath them with almost no exception caused by leakage or galvanism (electrical flow).
Next is the topic of mercury, neurotoxicity, autism, cancer, and other diseases. There is no reason why anyone should be voluntarily exposing themselves to mercury. There are inexpensive, safe, and superior alternatives.
This 30-minute video by Dr. David Kennedy may help answer this question.

What is the difference between mercury-free and mercury-safe?
Mercury-free dental offices do not place any mercury amalgam fillings recognizing that superior materials exist. However since amalgam fillings are so common, dental work is often needed on these teeth, and amalgam fillings are removed without considering the dangers of doing so. This poisons everyone nearby and contaminates even the air of the entire office with mercury vapor.
Mercury-safe dental offices have recognized that implementing the SMART protocol when removing existing mercury amalgams is absolutely critical for health and safety for the patient, dentist, staff, and even the environment. Of course, mercury-safe dental offices are inherently also mercury-free (meaning they would never place an amalgam, and don't even have amalgam in the office as an option).
-
Do you use the SMART protocol? Are you SMART-certified?
Yes. This is arguably one of the most important components of biological dentistry. The SMART protocol is a series of methods used to safely remove silver-mercury (amalgam) fillings from your mouth. See our SMART Protocol page for a thorough explanation.

But don't white fillings release BPA?
We use the latest Voco brand of filling material called Admira Fusion which is a ceramic-based filling material, free of classic monomers like BPA, including BPA cousins like bis-GMA, TEGDMA, or other plasticizers.
Traditional composites, some of which are marketed as BPA-free, still release BPA upon curing because they still implement plastic polymer chemistry and contain BPA precursors.
So BPA is easily avoided. But really, BPA and mercury are not comparable toxins.

No true biological dentist does root canals. Don't you do root canals?
Root canals can lead to long-term health problems for many people. Their use as a long-term treatment of choice to save teeth is exaggerated and often shortsighted. Studies have shown that all (100%) root canal treated teeth harbor toxic anaerobic bacteria.
I don't perform root canal treatment, nor do I advise it to my patients as a long-term choice.
Learn more about Root Canals, including alternatives, resources, books, and the infamous movie, The Root Cause, which clearly highlights the alternative views on root canals.
If you have root canal treated teeth or "need" one, your Biological Dental Consultation will reveal a wealth of information to help you make a fully-informed decision.

What about fluoride?
Fluoride is yet another topic debated by conventional and biological dentistry. The more education one receives on fluoride (outside of the mainstream narrative), the closer one will come to the realization that the truth is not what it seems. Fluoride is unnecessary and harmful. You can read more about Fluoride in our blog article.
The Fluoride Action Network is working to eliminate the toxic policy of water fluoridation. They are making progress and we are hopeful that they succeed sooner rather than later. The Weston Price Foundation also has a lot to say about fluoride.
We are a fluoride-free office, and I would love to tell you more about why in-person.

Are dental X-Rays safe?
Concern about radiation exposure can sometimes be overblown, but can, at times, be justified. It's important to understand dental X-Ray risks and safety. After all, "radiation" implies potential danger. Before reading further, rest assured that the way and frequency in which X-Rays are used in a modern (digital) dental office, there is next-to-nothing to be concerned about.
The Science
X-Rays are in fact a form of ionizing radiation. This can result in the formation of free radicals. Any damage caused in this way can be cumulative. Brushing this off without understanding the physiological effect isn't fair. Instead, we should examine the relative impact of this.
The sun, the earth itself, and random rays from outer space all bombard us constantly with ionizing radiation, including X-Rays and the stronger gamma rays, at a similar degree to dental x-rays. What this means is that the amount of X-Rays received from a dental office is about the same as the amount we're receiving by simply living on earth minute-to-minute. We've evolved to live in such an environment. Our bodies are designed to deal with ionizing radiation and free-radicals by using strategies such as antioxidants like vitamin C, glutathione, superoxide dismutase, and other methods to reverse the oxidation and repair any damage to tissues. This happens all day long, every second, automatically. The body is amazing!
Therefore, under reasonably healthy conditions, dental x-rays appear to pose negligible risk. Under conditions of unmitigated oxidative stress and severe illness, it may be wise to avoid excess exposure.
The Benefits
Dental X-Rays are used to discover dental disease early. Problems are rarely visible to the eye until it is too late for simple solutions. X-Rays reveal otherwise invisible problems and allow early intervention for a more conservative solution. The impact to health of undiscovered dental disease is arguably much more profound than the risk of dental X-Rays.

Do you offer zirconia crowns or zirconia implants?
Biological dentistry is metal-free dentistry. Yes, ceramic (zirconia and/or porcelain) is arguably the most biocompatible, esthetic, healthy, and reliable crown material ever to be available in the history of dentistry. We generally choose porcelain for teeth in the smile zone, and zirconia for the molars for strength, health, and beauty.
Zirconia implants have come a long way since their inception. In fact zirconia implants are our #1 choice by far. We are very happy to provide the latest in metal-free zirconia implants by CeraRoot as a one-piece option.
For more information about implant choices, please see our Dental Implants article.
-
Do you offer sleep dentistry, sedation, or nitrous oxide (laughing gas)?
Yes, when appropriate, most procedures can be performed in-house under twilight sleep for maximum comfort and anxiety relief. Patients with high anxiety or other conditions requiring sedation are able to transform their dental health easily, safely, and even pleasantly.
Some patients feel more comfortable under the light sedation of nitrous oxide gas, and we are able to accommodate them when appropriate. Nitrous oxide is not advised for those with specific MTHFR genetic variants, or other b-vitamin metabolic deficiencies.
-
Why are you not a member of the ADA?
The American Dental Association promotes some conventional dental procedures that are contrary to the positions held in biological dentistry. By maintaining membership, we would be supporting practices which oppose our goals.
Instead, the IAOMT, IABDM, HDA, and AAPS all promote an approach to dentistry and healthcare that we can proudly stand behind.
-
Do you take my insurance?
We generally expect dental insurance to be financially helpful, but often times we realize it acts as a barrier standing between you and good dental health. We'll let you know how your insurance works and whether or not it will help or hurt with your health goals. In general, we work with almost all Traditional and PPO insurance plans. We even accept some HMO insurance plans for specialty dentistry. Please call us and we can provide more detailed information about your insurance. This page provides more detailed answers about insurance.
